Description
This papercut artwork is an original piece, crafted with meticulous precision and a strong sense of artistic intention. NEKA begins each work with a digital design that she then transfers to black cardstock, cutting the entire composition with a scalpel in a single continuous line — a technique that requires exceptional focus and spatial awareness.
Mares belongs to the MOMA series, a body of work in which the artist explores new compositional approaches within the language of papercutting. Drawing inspiration from ancient pictorial traditions and early civilizations, the series features female figures with a stately, frontal presence, combined with geometric forms reminiscent of Egyptian and Mesopotamian aesthetics. Influenced by Mediterranean culture, sunlight and the visual richness of ceramics, these elements come together in a contemporary interpretation that bridges past and present.
The piece is mounted on Canson paper (50% cotton) Flor de Lys, where the artist’s signature appears. Due to the nature of the papercut, the artwork itself cannot be signed directly. Mares is presented framed in a black Barth aluminium frame. If you would like to request the piece unframed, mounted on a different paper colour or left unmounted for framing between glass, please feel free to contact us.

My first piece by NEKA:From the moment I discovered her work, I was captivated. NEKA was the first Spanish artist working in papercutting whom I had the pleasure of meeting. I followed her practice closely, and when I learned she was retiring the Imperfect Women series, I knew I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to own one of those pieces.

I chose Camila, a beautiful portrayal of imperfect womanhood — strong, sensitive and self-assured. Her gesture of embracing herself is a reminder of the importance of accepting who we are.

The advice of Belma Craft & Art
If you prefer a different presentation for Mares, consider a minimalist frame that keeps the focus on its clean lines and visual balance. Framing it between two glass panels creates a light, floating effect, allowing your wall colour to become the perfect backdrop for the papercut.
Nekane Jiménez, both an artist and art teacher, began her career after graduating with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Salamanca in 2014, specializing in painting. She later completed a postgraduate programme in Illustration Applied to Design in Barcelona (2017).
In her early work, she showed a strong interest in experimenting with forms and materials while maintaining a refined aesthetic sensibility and an ongoing exploration of the interplay between technique and chance.
At this stage she created large collages, combining painting—treated as a material in itself—with non-pictorial elements such as wood panels, fabrics or plastics. These components appeared in highly abstract compositions influenced by Spanish artists like Millares, Tàpies and Picasso.
During her postgraduate studies, NEKA experienced a significant shift in her artistic approach, moving toward smaller illustrations created on paper and cardboard. This transition was shaped both by the academic environment and by practical constraints, as her room served as her studio. Brushes gave way to scissors and scalpels, and wood was replaced by paper, cardboard and fabric.
This marked her full entry into the world of collage, leaving behind her earlier painterly assemblages, yet maintaining the simplicity of form and line that continues to define her work.
For several years, one of her central themes was womanhood, explored through the Imperfect Women series—a portrayal of strong, free and sophisticated women with a distinctive aesthetic treatment.
Her nomadic lifestyle eventually led her to settle in a small town in Zamora, in the interior of Spain. Surrounded by nature and rural landscapes, she found a new source of inspiration and created the collection Entre Lindes in 2021.
Following this body of work, NEKA developed Ribazos, a series that continues her dialogue with the rural environment, focusing on the edges, boundaries and textures of the landscape that surrounds her daily life.
NEKA’s practice is characterised by versatility across techniques and disciplines, allowing her continuous artistic exploration and growth. She has participated in numerous art events, including UTOPIA (Barcelona, 2018 and 2019) and FLECHA (Madrid, 2021), and has taken part in both solo and group exhibitions. She has also collaborated with several brands, most recently Springfield and H&M.
